Justice Aggrey Muchelule has secured a new position as the Principal Judge of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Court of Justice.
This appointment was officially announced on Thursday during the 27th Meeting of Attorneys General and Ministers of Justice held in Lusaka, Zambia.
Attorney General Dorcas Oduor extended her congratulations to Muchelule, expressing pride in his new role, which she described as a reflection of his judicial excellence.
She further emphasized that this position is an honor not only for Justice Muchelule but also for Kenya as a nation.
Justice Muchelule will serve a five-year term leading the COMESA Court, where he will be responsible for guiding the court in its mission to resolve cross-border disputes and promote legal cooperation among the 21 member states of COMESA.
His judicial career commenced in 1982 as a District Magistrate, and he progressively advanced to the role of Chief Magistrate, serving in various locations including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kakamega, and Eldoret.
By 2009, he had been appointed to the High Court, where he oversaw significant cases and led divisions in Kisii, Embu, Bungoma, and Kisumu.
Justice Muchelule holds a Master of Laws and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
His experience also includes participation in the Task Force on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and serving as a Commissioner with the Judicial Service Commission.
His ascension to the COMESA Court comes with its own set of challenges, having previously faced political turbulence, including exclusion from promotions by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2021 under contentious circumstances.
Additionally, his judicial record includes presiding over high-profile cases such as the Ksh 6 billion cocaine scandal and issues related to the Ksh 5.8 billion Goldenberg affair.
